Introduction to the PGDM Course

PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) is a two-year AICTE-approved postgraduate management programme offered by autonomous business schools across India. It covers Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Operations, Strategy and Business Analytics — and is officially recognised as equivalent to an MBA by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) when the host institute is AICTE-approved. Top PGDM institutes in India include XLRI Jamshedpur, SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurgaon, IMI Delhi, IMT Ghaziabad, Great Lakes Chennai, Goa Institute of Management, T.A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), KJ Somaiya and Welingkar (WeSchool).

PGDM course fees vary widely by college. Tier-1 PGDM institutes typically charge INR 18-26 lakh for the full two-year programme; tier-2 colleges INR 10-18 lakh; and tier-3 colleges INR 5-10 lakh. State and government-funded PGDM institutes are usually well below INR 5 lakh.

PGDM Vs MBA

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) grants equivalence to a two-year PGDM from an AICTE-approved institute (preferably NBA-accredited) — making PGDM officially equivalent to MBA for higher studies, government jobs and PSU recruitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a PGDM better than an MBA?

Both PGDM and MBA are valuable. PGDM is an AICTE-approved diploma awarded by autonomous institutes with a more frequently updated, industry-oriented curriculum. MBA is a degree awarded by a UGC-recognised university. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) grants equivalence to a two-year PGDM from an AICTE-approved (preferably NBA-accredited) institute, making the two effectively equivalent for higher studies and most employment purposes.

What is the full form of PGDM?

PGDM stands for Post Graduate Diploma in Management — a two-year postgraduate management programme regulated by AICTE.

Is PGDM equal to MBA for government jobs?

Yes — provided the PGDM is offered by an AICTE-approved institute and the candidate has obtained AIU equivalence. Most PSU and central government recruitments treat an AIU-equivalent PGDM as equivalent to an MBA degree.

Is PGDM costlier than MBA?

Fees vary widely. Tier-1 private PGDM institutes (XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI) typically charge INR 20-26 lakh for the full programme — comparable to top IIM PGP fees of INR 23-28 lakh. Government PGDM institutes and university MBAs at FMS Delhi, JBIMS Mumbai or IIT DMS can cost INR 2-12 lakh.

Can I be admitted to PGDM after the 12th?

No. PGDM is a postgraduate programme and requires a completed bachelor's degree. For an integrated path after Class 12, candidates can consider the IPM (Integrated Programme in Management) offered by IIM Indore, IIM Rohtak and others via the JIPMAT entrance.

Is a PGDM degree valid for government jobs?

A PGDM from an AICTE-approved institute with AIU equivalence is recognised for government and PSU jobs that require an MBA. Always verify that the host institute's PGDM has current AIU equivalence before applying.

Which PGDM course is the best?

'Best' depends on individual career goals. For consulting and finance, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI and IIM PGPs are strong. For marketing, MICA, SPJIMR and IIM-K are well regarded. For analytics, Great Lakes, ISB and IIM-K's PGP-BL are popular.

Does PGDM have value abroad as well?

Yes. PGDM programmes from AACSB-, EQUIS- or AMBA-accredited Indian institutes (e.g. IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C, SPJIMR, MDI, IMI, XLRI) carry strong international recognition. AIU equivalence further supports admission to foreign universities and PhD programmes.
