The Mahatma Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Dental Sciences MGPGI is a renowned government dental education institution founded in 1990 in Puducherry. It is affiliated with Pondicherry University and approved by the Dental Council of India under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. MGPGI Pondicherry is recognized as one of the top dental colleges in the country among government institutions. The institute offers a five year BDS Bachelor of Dental Surgery program and a three year MDS Master of Dental Surgery course across seven specializations. Admissions for both programs are determined based on merit and an entrance examination, which differs for students applying through the domicile and all India quotas.
The institute provides Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Master of Dental Surgery programs for students at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels respectively. To secure a spot in the BDS program applicants need to go through the NEET UG exam followed by the counselling process organized by CENTAC Puducherry. For admission to the MDS course at the level MGPGI considers NEET MDS scores. Recently the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has acknowledged MGPGIs postgraduate programmes in Oral Medicine & Radiology and Pedodontics.
The college has separate hostel facilities for boys and girls to provide students with a comfortable living environment. There is also a health center on campus that offers first aid services. The library, which is centrally air conditioned houses an extensive collection of over 9180 books related to dental, medical and allied health sciences. It also includes 66 foreign journals and 19 Indian journals worth around ₹3.2 crores. While no new books were acquired this financial year due to budget limitations the library maintains an annual budget of ₹40 lakhs. Moreover the college boasts sports amenities, a robust IT infrastructure and a cafeteria serving both staff and students.
