For candidates seeking All India Quota (AIQ) seats in Deemed Universities, Central Universities, and ESIC colleges, the NEET counselling process is conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC). MCC will release official NEET UG 2026 counselling dates after the result is declared (expected late July 2026).

This blog covers everything you need to know after the NEET result, how to apply for counselling, and the complete roadmap to secure your seat.

By the end of this blog, you will know

  • The NEET UG 2026 counselling, managed by MCC, starts after the result is declared. It is conducted online for most rounds, but candidates must report in person during the final round for document verification and admission.
  • The seat allocation process for All India Quota (AIQ) seats is based on your NEET rank and preferences. The choice-filling stage is key — be strategic to maximise your chances of getting into your preferred college.
  • After securing a seat, you will need to present crucial documents such as your NEET admit card, rank letter, and Class 12 certificates. Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to avoid delays during verification.
  • The counselling process is divided into multiple rounds, including mop-up rounds for remaining seats. If you are not allotted a seat in an earlier round, adjust your preferences and try again in subsequent rounds.
  • Check the NEET cut-off for various categories and institutes (indicative, based on 2025-26 data). Choose your colleges and courses wisely based on your rank, and lock your choices before the deadline.

Here is a quick overview of essential details and highlights for NEET counselling 2026.

NEET Counselling Process 2026

NEET UG 2026 counselling process flowchart showing steps from registration to seat allotment

Here is a streamlined roadmap after the NEET UG 2026 result:

Step 1: Sign Up as a New User

Visit the official MCC website (mcc.nic.in) and enter your NEET roll number, application number, candidate name, date of birth, and a security pin. Click "I Agree" to proceed. Note the login credentials displayed for future reference.

Step 2: Fill in Personal Details

Provide permanent details such as your parents' names and address. These cannot be edited later, so ensure they match your official documents.

Step 3: Registration and Security Deposit Fees

Payment can be made via credit card, debit card, or net banking. Candidates must pay:

Registration Fee (Non-Refundable):

  • UR: INR 1,000
  • SC/ST/OBC/PwBD: INR 500

Security Deposit (Refundable):

  • 15% AIQ/Central Universities: INR 5,000
  • Deemed Universities: INR 10,000

Step 4: Registration Confirmation

After submitting your details, a registration slip will be generated. Print this slip as it is crucial for subsequent steps. Click "Login" to proceed.

Step 5: Available Choices

After registration, view available seats for AIQ and Deemed Universities. Select preferences by clicking the "+" next to the options you choose.

Step 6: Modify and Save Preferences

Rearrange, add, or delete choices as needed. Save your progress by clicking "Save & Continue" or "Save & Go to Home Page."

Step 7: Finalising Preferences

Ensure you lock your choices before the deadline. If you do not lock them manually, they will be auto-locked at the scheduled time. Print your locked preferences as a reference.

Step 8: Seat Allocation Results

After each round, MCC will announce seat allotment details including your allotted college, course, and category. The seat allocation letter must be presented at the college along with required documents.

Step 9: Document Verification

Report to the designated college with all required documents in original form. These typically include your NEET scorecard, rank letter, identity proof, category certificate, and other relevant documents.

Thinking about how to choose the right college? Here is how to choose a good medical college and make an informed decision.

Is Skipping All India Counselling Advisable?

Many students wonder if they should skip All India counselling when confident they will not secure their top choice. If you are confident about a state college, focusing on state counselling is reasonable. However, skipping All India counselling entirely is not advisable — you may still secure a better option elsewhere.

Tip: Attend both counselling processes if possible. While state counselling should be your priority, All India counselling broadens your chances for a better outcome.

Documents Required for NEET Counselling 2026

Candidates allotted a seat must report to their assigned institute with the following documents for verification:

  1. NEET Admit Card issued by NTA
  2. NEET Seat Allotment Letter issued by MCC
  3. Date of Birth Certificate (if Matric Certificate does not bear the same)
  4. NEET Result/Rank Letter issued by NTA
  5. Class X Certificate and Marksheet
  6. Class XII Certificate
  7. 8 Passport Size Photographs (same as on the application form)
  8. Identity Proof (Aadhaar/PAN/Passport/Driving Licence)
  9. Character Certificate (may be asked)
  10. PwBD Certificate (if applicable), issued by a competent authority

Not Familiar with the Character Certificate? You Are Not Alone

A character certificate is often required for admissions as proof of good conduct during school or college.

Where to Get It:

  • From Your School or College: Request it formally; it typically takes a few days to process.
  • For Droppers: Contact the school or institution you attended before your gap year.

What It Includes: The certificate typically mentions your behaviour, discipline, and general conduct, and may confirm you were a student there for a specific period.

How to Confirm Whether Your Documents Are Verified?

The status of your document verification will be updated in your NEET login portal:

  • Regularly log in to check updates after uploading your documents.
  • If your documents are unclear, incomplete, or incorrect, your status may appear as 'Rejected', meaning you cannot proceed further.
  • Only after successful document verification can you move to the next stage of counselling.
  • Any false claims or errors in your form can lead to disqualification at any counselling phase.

After Clearing NEET UG 2026 — What to Do For MBBS Admission?

1. Check NEET Cut-Offs and Rank

Check the cut-offs for different categories (AIQ, state quota, and private institutions). Cut-offs and seat figures are indicative, based on 2025-26 data, and will be updated once official 2026 figures are released.

  • AIQ (All India Quota): Understand your eligibility for top government colleges.
  • State Quota: Each state has its own cut-off; state residents may have a better chance in state-based counselling.
  • Private Colleges: Cut-offs may differ; these typically have higher fees than government institutes.

2. Shortlist Colleges Based on Your Rank and Preferences

Once you know your rank, research and shortlist colleges. Consider rank, category (SC/ST/OBC/PwBD), location, infrastructure, and fee structure. You can also consider MBBS abroad if unable to secure a seat in India.

3. Register for Counselling

  • MCC Counselling (mcc.nic.in): For AIQ seats — MBBS, BDS, and other courses at central and deemed universities.
  • State Counselling: For state quota seats, check your state's dedicated counselling portal.
  • AYUSH Counselling: BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and BNYS seats are filled by AACCC (aaccc.gov.in).
  • Private Colleges: Many private colleges conduct their own counselling; check their websites.

4. Choice Filling and Locking

  • Prioritise government colleges and top private ones based on your rank.
  • Select the best colleges first, followed by other options in descending order of preference.
  • Lock your choices before the deadline; failing to lock means they will be locked automatically, but confirm them yourself.

5. Seat Allotment and Results

  • Round 1: Seat allocation based on NEET rank and preferences.
  • Round 2: Modify preferences and participate if you did not get a seat in Round 1.
  • Mop-Up Round: Fill remaining vacant seats after the first two rounds.

6. Reporting to the College

  • Bring all original documents — NEET scorecard, rank letter, identity proof, category certificate (if applicable), Class 12 marksheet, and passport photos.
  • Pay the required admission fee (varies by college).
  • Once documents are verified and fees are paid, you will receive an admission confirmation letter.

FAQs: After NEET UG 2026 Result — Counselling and Next Steps

1. What if I miss the NEET counselling registration deadline?

Missing the deadline could mean missing that round. Check if late registration is available, or wait for subsequent rounds. You can also consider private medical colleges or MBBS abroad.

2. Can I change my preferred colleges after locking my choices?

Once you lock your choices, you cannot change them. Be clear about your preferences before finalising. If you miss locking, preferences will be automatically submitted — double-check before the deadline.

3. How do I know if I am eligible for state counselling?

State counselling eligibility depends on your domicile status. If you have lived in the state for several years or are a permanent resident, you are likely eligible. Verify specific criteria on the official portal of the relevant state authority.

4. What is the difference between AIQ and State Quota counselling?

AIQ refers to 15% of medical seats available to all-India students, managed by MCC. The State Quota applies to the remaining 85% of seats for residents of that state, handled by each state's medical authority.

5. How much will I need to pay in fees for NEET counselling?

You will pay a non-refundable registration fee and a refundable security deposit during registration. Tuition fees vary by college type — government seats typically cost less than private institutions.

6. Is there any way to apply for MBBS abroad if I did not qualify for NEET?

Some countries accept students who attempted NEET but did not clear it, such as Russia and Kyrgyzstan. These countries often allow students to qualify for the NMC screening test later, after enrolment.

7. When will I get the final seat allotment result?

Seat allotment results are released after each round. After Round 1, results are typically available within a few days. If you do not get a seat, the process continues with Round 2 and the Mop-Up round.

8. Can I participate in both AIQ and state counselling?

Yes, you can apply for both, but you need to register separately for each. Be clear on different eligibility requirements and deadlines.

9. What documents will I need for verification at the college?

You will need your NEET scorecard, rank letter, identity proof, category certificate (if applicable), Class 12 marksheet, and passport-size photos. All documents must be original and correctly attested. PwBD candidates must also carry their PwBD certificate issued by a competent authority.

10. Can I get admission to MBBS without clearing NEET in India?

In India, NEET is mandatory for MBBS admission in government and most private colleges. Some foreign universities accept students with NEET scores or allow NEET-qualified students to apply post-admission.

11. How does the mop-up round work for NEET counselling?

The mop-up round fills remaining vacant seats after all other rounds. It is significant for students who were not allotted a seat in earlier rounds, but comes with strict deadlines.

12. Can I apply for MBBS in private colleges after state counselling is over?

Yes. If you have not secured a seat after state counselling ends, you can apply directly to private colleges, many of which have their own counselling process for leftover seats.

13. What is AYUSH counselling and who handles it?

AYUSH counselling covers seats in BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homeopathy), BUMS (Unani), and BNYS (Naturopathy) programmes. It is conducted by the Ayush Admissions Central Counselling Committee (AACCC) at aaccc.gov.in.

14. What is the correct term for differently-abled candidates — PwD or PwBD?

The current official term is PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disability), as per the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016. The earlier term PwD has been replaced. PwBD candidates should ensure their certificate is issued by the competent authority as prescribed by NMC/MCC guidelines.
