IIT Roorkee has announced the GATE 2025 results and cutoff marks on its official website. The GATE cutoff marks are different for each branch and category. These cutoffs will help decide who can get admission into M.Tech courses, apply for PSU jobs or receive scholarships through GATE scores. The highest score in Computer Science was 100 out of 100, while in Mechanical Engineering, it was 95.33 marks.

By the end of this blog, you will know

  • The complete process of calculating the GATE IIT Cutoff score using the official formula.
  • Expected GATE IIT Cutoff scores for different IITs and popular engineering branches.
  • The minimum GATE score required for admission into top IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and others.

What is the GATE Cutoff for IIT?

GATE cutoff means the minimum marks or score a student needs for admission into M.Tech or other postgraduate programs in IITs, NITs, and other top colleges. Students must score above the cutoff marks to increase their chances of admission to top institutes.

How to Calculate the GATE 2025 Score?

GATE IIT Cutoff scores are calculated based on a specific formula set by the exam authorities. Since some papers like Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Civil Engineering (CE) have many applicants, these exams are conducted in multiple sessions. To ensure fairness, marks for these papers are normalised.

The GATE score is calculated using the following formula:

GATE Score = Sq + (St - Sq)  (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq)

Where,

  • M = Marks obtained by the candidate.
  • Mq = Minimum qualifying marks for general category candidates in the paper.
  • Mt = Average marks of top 0.1% ( or top 10 of candidates, whichever is higher)
  • Sq = 350 (score assigned to qualifying marks)
  • St = 900 (score assigned to top-performing candidates)

GATE IIT Cutoff Scores and Normalisation 2025

In GATE 2025, the scores are calculated out of 1000, while the exam is conducted for 100 marks. Since some papers are held in multiple sessions, the normalisation process is used to balance the difficulty level of each session.

  • Scoring above 85 marks increases the chances of securing top ranks.
  • Normalisation ensures that no candidate is disadvantaged due to tougher exam sessions.
  • Higher GATE scores help in getting admission to IITs and recruitment in PSUs.
