IIT Roorkee has announced the GATE 2025 results and cutoff marks on its official website. The GATE cutoff marks are different for each branch and category. These cutoffs will help decide who can get admission into M.Tech courses, apply for PSU jobs or receive scholarships through GATE scores. The highest score in Computer Science was 100 out of 100, while in Mechanical Engineering, it was 95.33 marks.
By the end of this blog, you will know
- The complete process of calculating the GATE IIT Cutoff score using the official formula.
- Expected GATE IIT Cutoff scores for different IITs and popular engineering branches.
- The minimum GATE score required for admission into top IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and others.
What is the GATE Cutoff for IIT?
GATE cutoff means the minimum marks or score a student needs for admission into M.Tech or other postgraduate programs in IITs, NITs, and other top colleges. Students must score above the cutoff marks to increase their chances of admission to top institutes.
How to Calculate the GATE 2025 Score?
GATE IIT Cutoff scores are calculated based on a specific formula set by the exam authorities. Since some papers like Mechanical Engineering (ME) and Civil Engineering (CE) have many applicants, these exams are conducted in multiple sessions. To ensure fairness, marks for these papers are normalised.
The GATE score is calculated using the following formula:
GATE Score = Sq + (St - Sq) (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq)
Where,
- M = Marks obtained by the candidate.
- Mq = Minimum qualifying marks for general category candidates in the paper.
- Mt = Average marks of top 0.1% ( or top 10 of candidates, whichever is higher)
- Sq = 350 (score assigned to qualifying marks)
- St = 900 (score assigned to top-performing candidates)

GATE IIT Cutoff Scores and Normalisation 2025
In GATE 2025, the scores are calculated out of 1000, while the exam is conducted for 100 marks. Since some papers are held in multiple sessions, the normalisation process is used to balance the difficulty level of each session.
- Scoring above 85 marks increases the chances of securing top ranks.
- Normalisation ensures that no candidate is disadvantaged due to tougher exam sessions.
- Higher GATE scores help in getting admission to IITs and recruitment in PSUs.

Looking to fund your IIT education? Learn how to secure an education loan for IIT with our step-by-step guide, and take the first step toward achieving your academic goals.
What is a good GATE rank?
A good GATE rank depends on your goal.
- Rank under 200: High chance of getting a PSU call.
- Rank under 1000: Good chance of getting admission to top IITs or NITs.
However, it is important to remember that getting a good rank alone does not guarantee selection. PSUs and IITs usually conduct additional selection rounds like interviews, group discussions (GD), or personal interviews (PI).

GATE IIT Cutoff: Qualifying vs Admission Cutoff
Many students get confused between the GATE qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff. Both are different and serve different purposes in the admission process. Here is how they are different:
Qualifying GATE Cutoff
|
Admission GATE Cutoff
|
It is the minimum score needed to qualify for the GATE exam.
|
It is the score decided by institutes like IITs, NITs, and IIITs for giving admission.
|
This cutoff only makes you eligible to apply for admission.
|
This cutoff is the final score range (opening & closing ranks) required for admission to a particular course or institute.
|
Scoring qualifying marks does not guarantee admission.
|
Even if you meet the admission cutoff, selection depends on seat availability and other factors.
|
Announced before the result declaration.
|
Announced after the result is declared.
|
Released by the GATE conducting authority on the GOAPS portal.
|
Released by individual institutes on their admission portals like CCMT/COAP.
|
It mentions qualifying marks for each subject paper.
|
It mentions opening and closing ranks for each course offered in different institutes.

GAIL Selection Process through GATE 2025
The selection process for GAIL includes three main steps. First, candidates are shortlisted based on their GATE 2025 scores. After that, the shortlisted candidates have
to attend a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). Finally, those who clear both rounds must pass a medical fitness test to get selected for the job.
Factors Determining GATE IIT Cutoff 2025
The cut-off marks for GATE 2025 will depend on several important factors:
uestion paper also plays a role. Most students will score high if the paper is easy, increasing the cut-off. But if the paper is difficult, the cut-off will be lower.
GATE cut-off marks differ for categories like General, OBC, SC, ST, etc. Each category will have its cut-off based on reservation rules.
The GATE IIT Cutoff 2025 will decide whether a student can get admission to top IITs. Scoring above the cutoff marks increases your chances of getting selected for M.Tech courses in IITs. Students should stay updated with the latest cutoff trends and prepare well for the exam. With good marks and proper planning, students can achieve their dream of studying in the best engineering colleges like IITs.
