Understanding NMAT cutoffs is crucial for candidates aiming to secure admission to top B-schools. The NMAT cutoff represents the minimum score or percentile required by various institutions to qualify for further selection rounds, such as group discussions, personal interviews, and written ability tests.

In this blog, you will get to know everything from sectional cutoffs to differences by program and campus. This guide will help you understand the cutoff requirements and prepare effectively for the NMAT exam and admission process.

NMAT Cutoff Highlights

Key Point

Details

Institutions Accepting NMAT Scores

Over 42 B-Schools in India and 24 abroad accept NMAT scores.

Minimum Passing Marks

There are no minimum passing marks for the NMAT; however, each college sets its own cutoff to determine PI call eligibility.

Typical Cutoff Range

NMAT cutoffs typically range from 150 to 240, depending on the college's selectivity, program quality, and applicant volume.

Sectional Cutoffs

Many colleges set sectional cutoffs. Failing to meet a sectional cutoff, even if the overall cutoff is met, can prevent receiving a call.

Good Score Range

A score of 190–230 is generally considered good for NMAT, though many colleges don’t publish official cutoffs.

Attempts Allowed

Students can take up to 3 NMAT attempts to improve scores. However, some colleges, like NMIMS, only accept the score from the first attempt, so students should verify requirements with each institution individually.

Factors Affecting NMAT Cutoff

Factor

Impact on NMAT Cutoff

Number of Students

As more students take the NMAT, the cutoff score generally increases, as it’s directly related to the number of test-takers.

Difficulty Level of Exam

When the exam’s difficulty level is higher, cutoff scores tend to be lower, reflecting the challenge of the test.

Selectivity of Program

More selective programs, like those highly regarded by students and employers (e.g., NMIMS Mumbai), have higher cutoff scores.

Number of Seats Available

When colleges increase their seat capacity, the cutoff score usually decreases as more seats allow more candidates to qualify.

Regardless of the NMAT cutoff, the only sure-shot way to secure a spot at your target college is to get a good score. Getting a good score depends on how well you have grasped the concepts of the syllabus.

FAQs about NMAT Cutoff 2024

What is the NMAT cutoff?

The NMAT cutoff is the minimum score or percentile required by participating B-schools for candidates to qualify for the next stage of the admission process, such as group discussion, interview, or written assessment.

How is the NMAT cutoff determined?

NMAT cutoffs are determined based on factors such as the number of applicants, exam difficulty level, available seats, and the admission policies of individual colleges.

Do NMAT sections have individual cutoffs?

Yes, many B-schools set sectional cutoffs for Language Skills, Quantitative Skills, and Logical Reasoning, in addition to the overall NMAT cutoff.

What is the typical NMAT cutoff for top B-schools like NMIMS Mumbai?

For highly competitive programs such as NMIMS Mumbai’s MBA, the NMAT cutoff usually ranges around 235+ score or approximately the 95th percentile, depending on the year.

Is there a difference in NMAT cutoffs for various NMIMS campuses?

Yes, the NMAT cutoff varies by campus. NMIMS Mumbai generally has the highest cutoff, followed by NMIMS Bangalore and NMIMS Hyderabad, while other campuses may have relatively lower cutoffs.

Do NMAT cutoffs vary for different MBA specialisations?

Yes, cutoffs may differ depending on the MBA specialisation, such as HR, Business Analytics, or Finance, based on demand and seat availability.

Can NMAT cutoffs change every year?

Yes, NMAT cutoffs may vary each year due to changes in exam difficulty, the number of test-takers, seat availability, and institutional admission policies.

What is the expected NMAT cutoff for colleges other than NMIMS?

Many other participating colleges usually accept NMAT scores of around 200+ or approximately the 85–90 percentile, depending on the institution.

What happens if I meet the overall cutoff but miss a sectional cutoff?

If you fail to meet a sectional cutoff, you may not qualify for further admission rounds even if your overall NMAT score meets the required cutoff.

Are NMAT cutoffs the same for all admission rounds?

In most cases, NMAT cutoffs remain similar across admission rounds. However, some institutions may slightly adjust cutoffs depending on seat availability.

Do NMAT cutoffs differ for reserved category candidates?

Some colleges may offer relaxations in NMAT cutoffs for reserved category candidates, depending on their admission policies.

How are NMAT cutoff scores announced?

After the NMAT results are declared, participating colleges publish their cutoffs on official admission websites or portals.

What should I do if my NMAT score is below the cutoff?

If your NMAT score is below the cutoff, you can apply to colleges with lower cutoffs or consider retaking the NMAT exam in the next admission cycle.

Can I apply to multiple colleges using my NMAT score?

Yes, NMAT allows candidates to send their scores to multiple participating institutions, each of which evaluates the score based on its own cutoff.

Can NMAT cutoff trends help predict future cutoffs?

Past cutoff trends can provide general insights, but yearly changes in exam difficulty and applicant numbers make exact predictions uncertain.
