As one of the newer IIMs, it is often referred to as a "baby IIM." In the NIRF Ranking 2024, IIM Amritsar was placed 47th. The institute is well-known for its flagship MBA program, which admits students based on their CAT percentile followed by a personal interview. The CAT cutoff for IIM Amritsar is 88 percentile overall, and for the 2023-25 batch, the minimum percentile required was 85. A total of 3,277 general category candidates were shortlisted for the PI WAT round, with 1,100 receiving final offers.
The MBA program at IIM Amritsar costs INR 21 lakh for two years. For the class of 2024, the average package for the top quartile was INR 19.59 LPA, with the highest package reaching INR 58.52 LPA. Top recruiters in 2024 included Accenture, Amazon, Cipla, Deloitte, Adani, BMW, and Cognizant, among others.

IIM Amritsar is the 15th IIM that was set up by the Ministry of Education (earlier known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development) with the assistance of the Government of Punjab.
The IIM Amritsar facilities and infrastructure ensures the smooth functioning of the institute. The list of IIM Amritsar facilities includes a well-furnished and spacious central library, classrooms equipped with modern infrastructure, and an advanced computer centre. The non-academic facilities of the institute include apartment-styled hostel facilities with all recreational services, sports complexes, and healthcare facilities. The permanent campus of the institute is currently under construction. So, the temporary campus has basic facilities for the convenience of the students and staff members. The IIM Amritsar facilities for the permanent campus are being planned in a better and organised manner.
