By the end of this blog, you will know

What is JoSAA and Why It Runs JEE Main Counselling

Set up by the Ministry of Education, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is the single, government-mandated body that conducts joint admissions to all IITs, NITs, IIITs and other GFTIs. Instead of each institute holding its own admission round, JoSAA runs one unified online counselling that uses your JEE Main 2026 (Common Rank List) or JEE Advanced 2026 rank as the entry point.

This means: there is no separate "JEE Main counselling" portal run by NTA — NTA conducts the JEE Main exam and declares results, after which JoSAA takes over the seat-allocation process.

JoSAA 2026 Schedule (Expected)

The official JoSAA 2026 schedule is released on josaa.nic.in after the JEE Main session 2 result is declared. Based on the JoSAA 2025 calendar and prior cycles, the 2026 cycle is expected to follow this pattern:

Event

Expected Window (2026)

JoSAA 2026 registration & choice filling opens

Expected: 2 June 2026 onwards (TBA — confirm at josaa.nic.in)

Mock seat allotment 1 & 2

Expected: mid-June 2026 (before the first allotment)

Round 1 seat allotment

Expected: late June 2026

Rounds 2–6 seat allotment

Expected: July 2026 (rounds spaced 5–7 days apart)

Final JoSAA reporting deadline

Expected: late July 2026

CSAB Special Rounds (NITs/IIITs/GFTIs only)

Expected: August 2026

Note: Dates above are expected, not confirmed. JoSAA usually publishes the full "Business Rules" PDF and schedule on its website immediately after JEE Main session 2 results.

Who is Eligible for JEE Main Counselling 2026?

1. Rank-Based Eligibility

  • For NITs, IIITs and GFTIs: A valid Common Rank List (CRL) rank or category rank in JEE Main 2026.
  • For IITs: A valid JEE Advanced 2026 rank (along with the qualifying-cutoff requirement set by JEE Advanced).

2. Class 12 Eligibility (per JEE Main Eligibility for Admission)

  • Pass in Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry / Biotechnology / Biology / Technical Vocational subject.
  • For IITs, IIITs, NITs and CFTIs: minimum 75% aggregate in Class 12 OR top 20 percentile in your respective board (65% for SC/ST/PwD), as per the NTA notification each cycle.

3. Age & Nationality

  • No upper age limit for JEE Main 2026 (rule revised earlier and continued).
  • Indian citizens, NRIs, OCI/PIO and foreign nationals are eligible (foreign nationals are accommodated under supernumerary seats at NITs as per JoSAA business rules).

Approval Based on Your 12th Marks. No Co-Applicant Required. Check Your Eligibility.

JoSAA 2026 Registration: Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Register on josaa.nic.in

Use your JEE Main 2026 application number and password (or JEE Advanced 2026 credentials, if applicable) to register. Confirm your personal, academic and category details — these are pulled from JEE Main / Advanced and cannot be altered later.

Step 2 — Fill Choices

Build your preference list by selecting institute + branch combinations (called "choices") in the order you want them. There is no upper limit on the number of choices, and choices can be reordered or deleted any time before the lock-in deadline.

Step 3 — Lock Your Choices

If you don't manually lock your choices by the deadline, JoSAA auto-locks them. Once locked, the list cannot be changed.

Step 4 — Seat Allotment

JoSAA processes allotments based on your rank, category and locked choice order. Results for each of the six rounds are published on josaa.nic.in.

Step 5 — Seat Acceptance

If allotted a seat, you must pay the Seat Acceptance Fee online (₹35,000 for IITs / ₹20,000 for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs; lower for SC/ST/PwD as noted in the snapshot above).

Step 6 — Online Reporting & Document Verification

Upload required documents on the JoSAA portal. Your allotted institute verifies them online; physical reporting at the institute is required only after final allotment, before classes begin.

Step 7 — Choose: Freeze / Slide / Float

  • Freeze: Accept the current allotment as final; you exit further rounds.
  • Float: Stay in the pool for any institute + branch higher in your preference list.
  • Slide: Stay only for a better branch within the same institute.

Choice-Filling Strategy: What to Get Right

Principle

How to Apply It

Order by personal preference, not just rank

The system will allot the highest-ranked choice you qualify for. If you'd genuinely prefer IIIT-Hyderabad CSE over NIT-Trichy ECE, list it first.

Add reach, match and safe options

Pad the top of the list with stretch picks, the middle with realistic options based on last year's closing ranks, and the bottom with assured options.

Don't skip seemingly "low" options

If you'd be okay with them, list them — it's the safety net that prevents "no allotment" outcomes.

Use mock allotments

JoSAA runs two mock allotments before Round 1. Treat them as feedback, not a forecast: tweak your list based on what you learn.

Cross-check with prior-year cutoffs

Refer to JoSAA's published "Opening & Closing Ranks" of the previous cycle for each institute + branch to set realistic expectations.

Minimal Documentation. Higher Chances of Approval. Easy Online Processes. Check Your Eligibility.

JoSAA 2026 Document Checklist

Keep scanned copies ready in PDF/JPG format (typically under 2 MB each) before registration opens. The exact list is published with the JoSAA Business Rules PDF; the standard set is below.

After JoSAA: CSAB Special Rounds

If seats remain vacant at NITs, IIITs or GFTIs after JoSAA Round 6, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts Special Rounds (CSAB-Special) in August 2026. CSAB also runs CSAB-NEUT for students from the North-East & Union Territories.

Important: CSAB Special Rounds are open only to candidates with a valid JEE Main 2026 rank. IITs do not participate in CSAB.

Common JoSAA Mistakes to Avoid

  • Filling too few choices. Listing only top branches at top NITs/IITs and skipping safer picks leaves you with "no allotment" if your rank doesn't reach them.
  • Treating Float / Slide casually. Float means you accept potentially being moved to a different institute entirely; Slide means same institute, different branch. Read both carefully.
  • Missing the reporting deadline. An allotted seat is forfeited if you don't pay Seat Acceptance Fee or report online in time.
  • Believing rumours. Always cross-check news with josaa.nic.in or the JoSAA helpdesk — the JoSAA portal is the single source of truth.
  • Forgetting CSAB. If you exit JoSAA without a seat, CSAB Special Rounds are your final shot for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats in the same cycle.

FAQs About JEE Main Counselling 2026

Who conducts JEE Main counselling 2026?

JEE Main counselling is conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), a Ministry of Education body, at josaa.nic.in. NTA only conducts the JEE Main exam and declares results.

When will JoSAA 2026 registration begin?

JoSAA 2026 registration is expected to begin around 2 June 2026, after the JEE Main session 2 result is declared. The exact date will be published in the JoSAA 2026 Business Rules on josaa.nic.in.

How many rounds of JoSAA counselling are there in 2026?

JoSAA conducts six rounds of seat allotment. If NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats remain vacant after Round 6, CSAB conducts Special Rounds in August. IITs do not take part in CSAB Special Rounds.

Do I need a JEE Advanced rank to apply through JoSAA?

You need a JEE Advanced 2026 rank only to be considered for IIT seats. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats are allotted using JEE Main 2026 rank.

What is the seat acceptance fee for JoSAA 2026?

Indicative figures based on JoSAA 2025: ₹35,000 for IITs (₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) and ₹20,000 for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs (₹10,000 for SC/ST/PwD). The fee is adjusted against tuition on admission. Confirm 2026 figures on josaa.nic.in.

What's the difference between Freeze, Float and Slide?

Freeze accepts the current allotment as final. Float keeps you in the pool for any higher-preference choice across institutes. Slide keeps you in the pool only for a higher-preference branch within the same institute.

Is there a Class 12 percentage requirement?

For IIT/NIT/IIIT/CFTI admissions, you need 75% aggregate in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST/PwD) or to be in the top 20 percentile of your board, as per NTA's annual notification.

Can I change my locked choices?

No. Once your choices are locked (or auto-locked by JoSAA at the deadline), they cannot be changed for that cycle. Choose carefully before locking.

What happens if I miss the seat acceptance deadline?

If you don't pay the Seat Acceptance Fee or report online within the JoSAA timeline, your allotted seat is forfeited and you exit further rounds.

Do foreign nationals participate in JoSAA?

Foreign nationals and OCI/PIO candidates participate in JoSAA under separate supernumerary seats at NITs and per the JoSAA Business Rules. They must meet JEE Main / JEE Advanced eligibility requirements.

Where do I report after seat allotment?

Initial online reporting happens on the JoSAA portal (upload documents + pay fee). Physical reporting is at your allotted institute, on the date communicated in your provisional seat allotment letter.

Are the JoSAA mock allotments binding?

No. The two mock allotments published before Round 1 are advisory only — they show what you would have got if Round 1 had run on that day. Use them to refine your choice list.

Can I withdraw from JoSAA after accepting a seat?

Yes. JoSAA allows a withdrawal window, usually before the final round. Withdrawn candidates can still participate in CSAB Special Rounds for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats.
