Confused Between IIITDM Kancheepuram and CEG Anna? Here's How to Decide Smartly

Students often face a tough choice when it comes to selecting between top institutes via different admission routes. Whether it’s CSAB or TNEA, the decision can impact your academic and career trajectory significantly.

A Reddit user on r/TNEA shared:

“I can get IIITDM Kancheepuram SM/ME in CSAB. I got CEG Manufacturing Engineering in TNEA round 2. What do you guys think I should choose? My JEE percentile - 95.7 and Cutoff-189.5. What would be better in terms of Academics, Placements and Student Environment? Please help.

Insight: This post reflects a common dilemma among students, choosing between a newer, centrally funded institute like IIITDM with emerging tech-oriented branches, or an established state college like CEG with broader industry recognition.

What do we infer from the above case?

When selecting between institutes and counselling routes, consider:

  • Your long-term career goal – core engineering vs interdisciplinary tech roles
  • Placement trends of the specific department
  • Campus culture and industry exposure
  • Location and networking advantages

Tip: Always look beyond the college name and compare specific departmental strengths, recent placement data, and alumni feedback before locking your choice.

How to Confirm Your Allotted Seat in TNEA Counselling 2025

Candidates are given multiple options to act on their seat allotment, depending on whether they are satisfied with the offered seat or wish to wait for a better one in future rounds.

The available options are listed below:

Option Description
Accept and Join Download the allotment letter and report to the assigned college by the deadline. Not reporting will cancel your seat and block you from further rounds.
Accept and Upward Accept the current seat but remain open to a better (higher preference) option if available in the next round.
Decline and Upward Reject the current seat but stay in the pool for a better allotment. If not allotted, you move to the next round.
Decline and Move to Next Round Reject the current allotment and skip the upward option. Try again in the next round with the same choices.
Decline and Quit Reject the current seat and exit the counselling process entirely.
Upward or Move to Next Round If no seat was allotted in the current round, you’ll either get a seat through upward movement or be considered in the next round automatically.

TNEA Admission 2025 Certificate Upload & Verification Process

Before moving to the choice filling stage, candidates must upload their documents online for verification. Verification is conducted through TNEA Facilitation Centres (TFCs), and candidates can choose their preferred centre.

Only those with successfully verified documents will be included in the final merit list. For sportspersons, in-person verification is done in Chennai. Keep the documents mentioned below ready for verification.

  • 10th, 11th & 12th Mark Sheets
  • Transfer Certificate
  • Registration Fee Receipt
  • Government School Study Proof (for 7.5% quota)
  • Community Certificate (ST/SC/SCA/MBC & DNC/BC/BCM)
  • Nativity Certificate (if applicable)
  • Income Certificate (if applicable)
  • First Graduate Certificate & Joint Declaration (if applicable)
  • Sri Lankan Tamil Refugee Certificate (if applicable)
  • Special Reservation Proof (Ex-servicemen, PwD, Sports)

Next comes one of the most important parts, filling in your preferred choices based on your rank.

TNEA 2025 Choice Filling Process for Ranks 1 to 39145

Once the TNEA rank list is released, the next important step is choice filling, where candidates get to select their preferred colleges and engineering branches. For candidates with ranks from 1 to 39145, this is your chance to plan wisely and prioritise the colleges and courses that best fit your goals.

TNEA Admission 2025 Cutoff

The DoTE, Tamil Nadu, publishes the cutoff scores after each counselling round. The cutoff score is essentially the minimum mark required to be considered for admission to BTech or BE courses through TNEA.

If your score is at or above the cutoff, you may be eligible for seat allotment, provided seats are available in your preferred college and course.

How Candidates Are Selected for TNEA Counselling 2025

TNEA doesn't conduct a separate entrance exam for engineering admissions. Instead, selection is purely based on your marks in the Class 12 board exams. Here's how your selection will be determined.

Scoring Pattern

Your marks in three key subjects, Mathematics (100 marks), Physics (50 marks), and Chemistry (50 marks), will be taken into account. Together, they make up a total score of 200 marks used for ranking.

Normalisation Across Boards

Since students from various education boards (like CBSE, ICSE, or State Boards) have different marking schemes, normalisation is used to bring all marks to the same scale.

Let’s say:

The highest Physics mark in the Tamil Nadu State Board is 100, and in another board it's 90. If a student from the other board scores 60, it will be recalculated as
(60/90) × 100 = 66.66%

Final Merit List

Once all marks are normalised, a single merit list will be created combining all candidates, regardless of the board. This list is the basis for seat allotment during counselling.

TNEA 2025 Merit List

The TNEA 2025 merit list plays a crucial role in the admission process, helping determine the order in which candidates are considered during counselling. The list is prepared out of 200 marks, factoring in key subjects from the qualifying exam.

If multiple candidates secure the same marks, a defined tie-breaking method is used to assign ranks. The final rank list (both overall and community-wise) will be available online.

Who Gets Reserved Seats in TNEA Admission 2025?
