JEE Mains Counselling 2026: Process, Seat Allotment and Cut-Off

The JoSAA Counselling 2026 process is progressing steadily for students seeking admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other participating technical institutes. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is conducting multiple rounds of seat allocation based on JEE Advanced and JEE Main ranks. As per the latest update, the JoSAA 2026 round 5 seat allotment result is expected to be released in mid-July 2026. Candidates allotted a seat in round 5 must complete their online reporting process within 3–4 days after the allotment, including fee payment and document upload, to confirm their admission.

Candidates who appeared for JEE Main 2026 are eligible to participate in the counselling process for admission to participating institutes, while those who qualified JEE Advanced 2026 can apply for seats in IITs. JEE Main Cutoff 2026 - JoSAA Cutoff for IITs, NITs, IIITs

The JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff percentile for the General category is around 93.10, while for OBC-NCL it is about 79.43, for SC 61.15, and for ST 47.90.

Candidates who meet these cutoffs become eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam, which is required for admission to IITs.

JoSAA releases separate admission cutoffs for institutes like NITs, IIITs, and other government-funded colleges based on JEE Main ranks, and these cutoffs vary each year depending on the institute, course, and category.

It is important to note that IIT admissions depend on JEE Advanced ranks, not JEE Main ranks, and only the top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main qualify to appear for JEE Advanced.

JEE Main Counselling 2026 Highlights

The JEE Main Counselling 2026, conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), has the following key process details:

  • The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) along with the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) oversees the counselling procedure.
  • Seats are distributed across various institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), and select AICTE-approved colleges.
  • Participation in the counselling is restricted to candidates who possess a valid JEE Main 2026 rank.
  • The counselling schedule consists of one mock allotment round followed by six main rounds of seat allocation.
  • The entire process is carried out online via the official JoSAA website.
  • Candidates need to complete their registration online by entering their JEE Main application number and password.
  • During counselling, candidates submit and lock their preferred choices of institutes and courses online, with the option to modify these choices prior to final locking.
  • Seat allocation depends on factors such as the candidate’s All India Rank (AIR), reservation category, availability of seats, and the preferences submitted.
  • After seats are allotted, candidates must undergo document verification at designated reporting centers, ensuring the documents correspond with those uploaded during the registration phase.

Eligibility for the JEE Main Counselling 2026

Candidates willing to participate in upcoming JoSAA JEE Mains counselling can check their eligibility to register for the counselling from the following eligibility criteria:

  • The candidates who appeared and qualified for the JEE Main 2026 examinations conducted by NTA.
  • Candidates with a rank of JEE Advanced can participate to enroll in IITs.
  • Candidates must have cleared the class XII examination from a recognized board and scored at least 75% in PCM (65% for SC/ST candidates).

The eligibility criteria for admission to participating IITs, NITs, IITs, and GFITs can vary depending on the requirements of institutes, the students can soon check their eligibility once the JoSAA releases the notification for the JEE Mains counselling.

JoSSA JEE Main 2026 Counselling Procedure

The candidates wishing to participate in JEE Mains counselling must be aware of the procedure of counselling to understand the steps.

  1. Registration for the JEE Main counselling on the JoSAA
  2. Preference in choices of colleges and courses.
  3. Mock seat allotment to help the candidates understand which seats will be allotted to them based on their choices, so they can change their preference accordingly.
  4. Final Seat allotment based on merit, JEE rank & score, category, availability of seats, and selected preferences.

The JoSAA counselling has six rounds of counselling, giving candidates enough time to enrol in their desired colleges. After the final seat allotment candidates can choose to freeze, float, or slide options.

The seat allotment options, freeze means locking your seat, float you wish to explore other institutes in further rounds of allocation when you are satisfied with the allotted seats, and slide means you accept the seat but are okay with admission into a highly preferred degree program in the same allotted college.

JEE Main 2026 CSAB Special Round Counselling

The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special counselling rounds for JEE Main 2026 to fill vacant seats in various government engineering institutes after the JoSAA counselling ends. There are three main types of CSAB counselling:

CSAB Special Round: This is for filling vacant seats left after the final JoSAA round in all NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) across India. Candidates with a valid JEE Main 2026 score can participate in these special rounds. This year, CSAB will conduct two special rounds for seat allocation.

CSAB NEUT: This round is for supernumerary seats reserved for candidates from North Eastern states and Union Territories (UTs) in NITs and some AICTE-approved institutes. It covers 12 states and UTs, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Andaman & Nicobar, and Lakshadweep.

CSAB Supernumerary: This round is specifically for supernumerary seats allocated to candidates from certain Union Territories like Andaman & Nicobar, Dadar & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, and Khandvi in select NITs such as NIT Durgapur, NIT Calicut, and SVNIT Surat.

The CSAB counselling registration for the special rounds starts after the completion of JoSAA counselling, typically in late July 2026, and candidates must register online on the official CSAB website to participate.
