Frequently Asked Questions

Who regulates the BUMS course in India?

BUMS is regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) - Unani Board under the Ministry of AYUSH. NCISM replaced the erstwhile CCIM under the NCISM Act 2020. Practitioner registration is done with state Unani boards.

How many marks should I get in NEET for BUMS?

To secure admission in a BUMS program, you must clear the NEET UG percentile cutoff - 50th percentile for UR/EWS and 40th percentile for OBC/SC/ST/PwBD candidates. Higher scores improve your chances of getting government and top private colleges.

What are the NEET marks required for BUMS in a government college?

NEET cutoffs vary year to year. Indicatively for 2024-25 govt BUMS counselling, opening ranks corresponded roughly to: UR/EWS - 430-550, OBC - 380-480, SC/ST/PwBD - 250-400. Check AACCC and state DME for the exact cycle cutoffs.

How expensive is the BUMS course in 2026-27?

Government BUMS colleges charge INR 10,000-40,000 per year. State Unani institutions like Jamia Hamdard, NIUM Bangalore, AMU Tibbiya and GTUC Lucknow charge INR 30,000-1,00,000 per year. Private colleges charge INR 1-3 lakh per year, and deemed institutions up to INR 4 lakh per year.

Which college is best for BUMS courses with low fees?

Government colleges like Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College (AMU Aligarh), Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College (New Delhi), Government Nizamia Tibbi College (Hyderabad) and Govt. Unani Medical College (Chennai) offer affordable BUMS with strong infrastructure.

Can I study BUMS online or through distance education?

No. BUMS requires hands-on clinical, surgical and practical training in NCISM-recognised colleges, making in-person attendance mandatory. There is no online or distance BUMS pathway.

Which is better: BUMS or BAMS?

The choice depends on your interest in traditional medicine. BUMS focuses on the Unani system, while BAMS emphasises Ayurveda. Both are 5.5-year NCISM-regulated programs with comparable career scope in AYUSH.

What entrance exams are required for BUMS?

NEET UG is the only mandatory entrance exam for BUMS admission in India since 2017. AIQ counselling is via AACCC (aaccc.gov.in); state quota via the respective state DME / state AYUSH counselling.

What is the BUMS fee in private colleges (example: Aligarh region)?

Aligarh Unani Ayurvedic Medical College & ACN Hospital, one of the established private BUMS colleges in the region, charges approximately INR 2,25,000 per year. Verify current fees on the college's official website.

Are there scholarships available for BUMS students?

Yes - state government merit scholarships, Ministry of Minority Affairs scholarships, AICTE Saksham (for PwBD students), Post-Matric Scholarship for SC/ST/OBC, and many state Unani board scholarships. Check the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in.

What is the duration of the BUMS course?

The BUMS course is 5.5 years - 4.5 years of academic study and 1 year of compulsory rotatory internship.

What career opportunities exist after completing BUMS?

Graduates can work as Unani doctors (Hakeem), join government AYUSH hospitals or dispensaries, set up private practice, work in pharma companies, or pursue MD/MS (Unani) via AIAPGET.

Can I practice medicine after completing BUMS?

Yes. After completing the 5.5-year BUMS (4.5 academic + 1 internship) and registering with the respective state Unani board, you become a certified Unani Medical Practitioner.

Is NEET score the only criterion for BUMS admission?

NEET UG is the qualifying exam. Final allotment also depends on category, domicile (for state quota), choice filling and seat availability through AACCC (AIQ) or state DME (state quota) counselling.

What is the PG pathway after BUMS?

BUMS graduates can pursue MD/MS (Unani) via AIAPGET (All India AYUSH PG Entrance Test) in specialties such as Moalajat, Ilmul Advia, Tahaffuzi wa Samaji Tib, Amraz-e-Niswan, Ilmul Saidla and others.
